The column is a stone pillar, often cylindrical in shape. In classical architecture, supports entablature (or arches).

The column can also not support any massive building element, but serve as a decorative or triumphal decoration, for example, with a statue on top or just stand in front of the facade, holding only the segments of the entablature, but not carrying all its load.

There are also half-columns and pilasters. The half-column protrudes from the plane of the wall by half its diameter; can support structural elements and perform a decorative function. Pilasters have external similarities with the column, but they do not have an enthasis; can be both a bearing architectural element, and decorative.

In modern architecture and modern construction, the columns do not so much fulfill the functional task as the decorative one.

It is the columns that emphasize the aristocracy and monumentality of the building.
